Firefox is a versatile and privacy-focused browser, and you can further optimize it for enhanced privacy, security, and productivity. This guide will walk you through setting adjustments under each settings tab to help you get the best experience.
General
Under the General tab, you can manage settings that affect how Firefox behaves.
- Startup: Set Firefox to “Open previous windows and tabs” to quickly resume where you left off. This is the first thing I enable every time I install a fresh instinse of FireFox.
- Tabs: Enable “Open links in tabs instead of new windows” for a cleaner browsing experience.
- Downloads: Choose a default download location and enable “Always ask you where to save files” to manage files efficiently. This can also stop files from automatically being downloaded onto your computer.
- Performance: Disable “Use recommended performance settings” and manually configure performance for a balance between speed and resource usage.
Home
Customizing the home page can boost your productivity.
- Disable: Sponsored Shortcuts Weather, Reccomended Stories, and Recent Activity**.**
Search
The Search tab lets you choose privacy-friendly search options.
- Default Search Engine: Google is set to default for some reason so switch to DuckDuckGo or Startpage for privacy-focused searches.
- Search Suggestions: Uncheck “Provide search suggestions” to prevent search terms from being sent to search engines.
- One-Click Search Engines: Remove any search engines you do not use to declutter your search options. I remove all but DuckDuckGo.
Privacy & Security
This section is critical for privacy and security enhancements.
- Enhanced Tracking Protection:
- Set to
Strictto block trackers, cookies, and cryptominers more effectively. This may cause issues with some websites but that is because those sites collect your information. - Enable “Website Privacy Preferences” to send “Do Not Sell” requests to websites. This automatically tells these websites to do not sell information they collect.
- Set to
- Cookies and Site Data:
- Select “Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed” to limit persistent tracking.
- Manage exceptions for sites you trust to stay logged in.
- Logins and Passwords:
- Enable “Ask to save logins and passwords for websites” for convenience.
- Un-check the ‘Ask to save passwords’. I save my passwords on Samsungs password manager.
- History:
- Set “Firefox will” to “Never remember history” for maximum privacy or “Use custom settings for history” to tailor it.
- Data Collection and Use:
- Uncheck all options to stop Firefox from collecting usage and technical data.
- Security:
- Enable warnings for deceptive content and dangerous downloads.
- Certificates:
- Enable OCSP (Online Certificate Status Protocol) to validate website certificates for secure connections.
- HTTPS-Only mode
- Enable HTTPS-Only Mode to ensure you are only accessing secure websites.
- Enable DNS over HTTPS using:
- Set to Max Protection.
Bonus: Add AI to Firefox with ChatGPT
You can add AI to Firefox to boost productivity without needing to create or needing to log into an account:
- FireFox Labs Section:
- In the FireFox Labs Section under Settings. Ensure the ‘AI Chatbot’ box is checked and enabled. It will then allow you to choose which Chatbot you wish to use.
- Some of the choices will force you to log into an account to use up front while others will let you use the AI Chatbot for a while before requiring you to log into an account.
Brining back the AI Chatbot Sidebar:
There is a x on the AI Chatbot sidebar that when closed you will need to add a button to your FireFox buttons up top.
To do this click on the 3 horizontal lines on the top right side of the FireFox Window. Then click on ‘More Tools’ > ‘Customize Toolbar…’
Here you will need to fide the icon titled ‘SideBar’ and add it to your toolbar next to the 3 horizontal lines. Now when you close out of the AI Chatbot you can click on the ‘SideBar’ icon to bring the AI Chatbot back.
Conclusion
By adjusting Firefox settings under each tab and incorporating AI tools, you can create a more private, secure, and productive browsing environment. Regularly review your settings to stay updated and maintain full control over your online experience.
