Plex has become a very popular media platform. It allows you to host your own personal Netflix without needing to pay a monthly subscription. Below are steps on how to set up your own Plex Media Server on a Windows Machine.
Plex Server Install Steps:
- Download Plex Media Server: Start by navigating to the Plex website (Plex media server can also be installed from the Microsoft Store) and download the Plex Media Server for Windows.
- Double-click the installer (File you just downloaded) and follow the on-screen wizard to install it.
- Launch Plex Media Server: Once installed, launch the Plex Media Server. You’ll know it’s running if you see the Plex icon in your system tray (near the clock).
- Create/Sign in to Your Plex Account: Open a web browser and head over to https://app.plex.tv. Sign in with your Plex account, or create one if you don’t have one yet. This account will be used to manage your Plex Media Server.
- Initial Server Setup:
- You’ll be prompted to name your server. Choose a cool name for your server, like “NerdShows” or something like that.
- Make sure the checkbox for “Allow me to access my media outside my home” is checked if you want remote access.
- Click “Next” to proceed.
- Note: In some situations there may be issues being able to actually view your Plex media from outside your home. I will post a guide on that soon. Usually if your devices are on the same network it usually will not have any issues.
- Add Your Media Libraries:
- Click “Add Library” and choose the type of media you’re adding (Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos, etc.).
- Click “Next” and then “Browse for Media Folder”, select the folders on your computer where your media files are stored.
- Repeat this process for each type of media you want to add.
- Note: When you set the Library up you do not want to unplug the drive that is being used. This is because if you move the drive to a new port then you will need to remap the Library to the new location.
- Complete the Setup: Once you’ve added all your media libraries, click “Next”, and then “Done”.
- Plex Client App: To access your media, you’ll need the Plex app on your devices (smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, etc.). Download the Plex app from the relevant app store and sign in with your Plex account.
- Plex can also be accessed from a web browser.
Voilà! Your Plex server is now set up and ready to roll. Time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your personal media repository.🍿📺
