Google Docs Dark Mode

Google Docs Dark Mode has become a highly requested feature as more people look for ways to reduce eye strain, save battery life, and enjoy a sleek, modern appearance. If you use Google Docs often, you may be wondering how to enable it. While Google provides a dark theme for Google Drive, enabling Google Docs Dark Mode requires a different solution.

Turning Google Drive Into Dark Mode

To activate dark mode in Google Drive (Docs are not included), follow these steps:

  1. Open Google Drive in your web browser.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Settings.
  3. Find the option for Theme and select Dark.

Once applied, your Google Drive interface will switch to dark mode. However, this change only affects Google Drive — it does not extend to Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides.

Google Docs and Dark Mode

Google Docs does not currently include a built-in dark mode on desktop. Instead, it relies on browser-based solutions. This means you will need to install a plugin or extension that forces websites into dark mode.

Using the Dark Reader Plugin

One of the most reliable tools for this is the Dark Reader plugin. It is available for most major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Dark Reader applies a dark theme to any website, including Google Docs, giving you a consistent dark mode experience.

How to Install Dark Reader:

  1. Go to your browser’s extension or add-on store.
  2. Search for Dark Reader.
  3. Click Install or Add to Browser.
  4. Once installed, activate Dark Reader from your browser’s toolbar.

With Dark Reader enabled, Google Docs will display in dark mode, making it easier on the eyes during long writing sessions.

✅ In summary:

  • Google Drive has a built-in dark mode you can enable through its settings. This does not change Docs though.
  • Google Docs does not have native support on desktop, but you can achieve it using the Dark Reader browser extension.
